4evergreen recyclability evaluation protocol

our work in action

At 4evergreen, more than 380 experts from across the fibre-based packaging value chain are working together to develop practical, evidence-based tools that support a low carbon, climate neutral society.
Our guidelines and protocols are designed to improve circularity at every stage of the packaging life cycle. They are built on rigorous testing, expert consensus and real-world application. Each document is a living resource, continuously updated to reflect the latest industry knowledge.
Our initial focus was on packaging compatible with conventional recycling mills. Today, our scope includes packaging that requires flotation deinking and specialised recycling processes.

WS-1 Recyclability Evaluation Protocol (2025)

The Recyclability Evaluation Protocol is the industry’s reference tool for assessing how efficiently fibre-based packaging can be recycled into usable raw material.It reflects the diversity of recycling technologies across Europe and provides a harmonised, evidence-based approach.

The protocol includes:

• Laboratory testing

using one of three dedicated methods
    • Conventional recycling
    • Flotation deinking
    • Specialised recycling

• Technical evaluation

using standardised templates

• Scoring

via an Excel-based tool that calculates recyclability performance
A positive score confirms technical recyclability, while higher scores indicate stronger performance. Supporting annexes and templates are available to guide users through each step.
These recommendations help municipalities, waste managers, and policymakers improve material recovery and reduce contamination.
