who we are

4evergreen is a cross-industry alliance committed to perfecting the circularity of fibre-based packaging.

what we do

We turn ambition into action. Our alliance develops practical, evidence-based tools that support the design, collection, sorting and recycling of fibre-based packaging.

technical toolkit

Our deliverables support every stage of the packaging life cycle:

  • Recyclability Evaluation Protocol
  • Circularity by Design Guideline
  • Guidance on Collection and Sorting

our latest activities

We are constantly evolving. Our members work with research institutes and technical experts to update our toolbox, share new insights and respond to emerging challenges.

who we are

4evergreen is a cross-industry alliance committed to perfecting the circularity of fibre-based packaging. We bring together more than 110 organisations from across the value chain, including forest managers, packaging producers, brand owners, retailers, recyclers and researchers.
Our shared ambition is to raise the recycling rate of fibre-based packaging in Europe to 90% by 2030. By working together, we are helping to build a climate neutral and sustainable society.

what we do

We turn ambition into action. Our alliance develops practical, evidence-based tools that support the design, collection, sorting and recycling of fibre-based packaging. These tools are created through collaboration and rigorous testing, ensuring they are ready to drive real change.
Our guidelines and protocols are already being used by packaging designers, waste managers and recyclers across Europe. They are helping to close the loop efficiently, effectively and sustainably.

out toolkit

Our deliverables support every stage of the packaging life cycle:

• Recyclability Evaluation Protocol (2025)

A harmonised method to assess how well fibre-based packaging performs across different recycling processes, including conventional, flotation deinking and specialised systems.

• Circularity by Design Guideline (2024)

Practical design recommendations to help brands create packaging that is easier to recycle, whether processed in conventional or specialised mills.

• Guidance on Collection and Sorting (2024)

Strategies to improve how fibre-based packaging is collected and sorted, ensuring more material is recovered and recycled.
Each of these tools is the result of extensive consultation and collaboration. They are living documents, continuously updated to reflect the latest knowledge and best practices.

why it matters

Fibre-based packaging is already a sustainability leader, and we are building on that strength:

key facts

from the European Paper and Board Industry
87%

of paper and board packaging is already recycled

91%

of water used id returned to the environment, cleanly and safely

48%

reduction of carbon emissions in the manufacturing process since 1990

60%

of energy user and generation is renewable higher than any other industry

and consumers are on board

62% say paper and cardboard are better for the environment, and 57% find them easier to recycle than other packaging types.

FAQ

Why do 4evergreen's goals matter?
Fibre-based packaging plays an important role in a circular economy. It protects products, supports global trade, and helps reduce food waste.

With a recycling rate of over 83% in the EU, fibre-based packaging is already a leader in circularity. Its renewable raw material, sourced from sustainably managed forests, further reduces environmental impact.

By improving recyclability and innovating in areas like repulpability and barrier solutions, 4evergreen is helping the industry meet growing demand while minimising pressure on natural resources.
We gather over 110 organisations across the value chain to develop science-based tools and guidelines that improve packaging design, collection, sorting, and recycling.

Packaging designers and recyclers are already using our deliverables across Europe. Through initiatives like the Circularity Success Stories awards, we showcase how members apply these tools to real-world projects, increasing innovation and collaboration across the sector.
Fibre-based packaging offers a strong combination of performance and sustainability. It's widely used across industries for its protective qualities, food safety credentials, and recyclability. With a recycling rate above 83%, it outperforms many other European materials. Advances in barrier technologies and coatings continue to enhance their functionality while maintaining recyclability. While 4evergreen is material-agnostic, we recognise fibre-based packaging as a key enabler of circularity.

While 4evergreen doesn't engage in political advocacy, our tools and guidelines support the goals of European legislation. Resources like the 4evergreen toolbox help stakeholders align with regulatory expectations by providing science-based Confidential methodologies that allow the industry to navigate change and contribute to a circular, climate-neutral economy.
